Heritage Walk: Hauz-i-Shamsi, Mehrauli
ULI India concluded the year with a heritage walk through the historic Hauz-i-Shamsi and Jharna complex in Mehrauli, Delhi. Built in 1230 CE by Sultan Iltutmish, Hauz-i-Shamsi was once a sacred water reservoir spanning nearly 2 hectares, marked by a beautiful red sandstone pavilion at its centre. Surrounding it stand notable monuments including the Jahaz Mahal, a Lodi-era retreat, and the tomb of Abdul-Haqq Dehlavi, a 17th-century Mughal scholar.
Adjacent to the reservoir is the Jharna, an elegant Mughal-era water cascade and garden, later enhanced by Akbar Shah II and Bahadur Shah II. Though parts of the complex face encroachment and deterioration, the walk highlighted the significance of protecting Delhi’s historic water systems and the role of heritage in shaping resilient urban futures.
