    Wrap-up
With more consumers opting to shop online and enjoy the convenience of having products delivered directly to doors, there has been much discussion over the purpose of today’s malls. A Singapore team created an new proposition – a services-only mall called SeedPlaza in Jingmen, Hubei. This mall sells services such as a high-tech supermarket, an education hub and a clinic. ULI Young Leaders Group (YLG) has invited the Afternaut team to come and share their design thinking process that led to this daring proposition, and to candidly debate with YLG if such an innovation could work here in Singapore.

    Gwen Tan

    Design Principal, The Afternaut Group

Gwen is the design principal for Afternaut and is one of the founders of Formwerkz Architects. As a qualified architect with more than 20 years of experience, she lends her design expertise to a wide range of trans-disciplinary projects in the commercial, residential, and hospitality industry in Singapore, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, France, and the UK. Gwen feels fortunate to be able to work on a spectrum of projects in the private and public sector as this has allowed the team to examine the complexities of each industry. She leads teams to develop solutions that cross industry boundaries - the insights and lessons learned from one industry are applied to a different one to pollinate new ideas. Gwen's passion for her work is driven by the desire to address the diverse challenges her clients face, gearing towards a seamless process to solving them, and balancing this with project longevity and refinement. She champions inclusive and sustainable design, which is manifested in the various scale of projects the firm is taking on. As recognition for her architectural pursuits, she was one of the few privileged to be selected for feature in “20 under 45: The Next Generation” by AUDE in 2010. She was also part of the team that won Building of the Year 2016 by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA) for the project “Open House”. Gwen embeds elements of biophillia in her work but loves having plants in her personal space as well. She’s also a great cook and prepares sumptuous meals on the weekends.
