Course overview
Based on the highly successful program that has been held in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Washington DC, ULI Asia Pacific is pleased to announce a new program for this fall entitled Urban Mixed Use Development: Lesson and Techniques for Success.
This unique program combines lectures and product case studies, along with candid panel discussion with a range of experts involved in the complex world of developing mixed use projects. Going beyond the theory of ‘what is mixed use’, the two day program will explore the challenges and increasing value creation that is being realized through synergy and effective operations of new development that combines residential, office, retail and civic uses.
Drawing on experience and lessons from the U.S and Australia, and featuring projects from Asia, the program will provide attendees with:
- A framework for defining and organizing mixed use development consistent with their company goals, while meeting the needs local policy makers and jurisdictional requirements
- An understanding of the key design and operating factors that lead to successful projects
- Guidance on pitfalls to avoid in planning and executing mixed use development
- Experience gained from developers working at a range of development scales and locations, and how they have successfully navigated mixed use projects
- International best practices in mixed use, and how the project type may vary depending on country location
- A look at the evolving trends and forces that will shape mixed use in the next 3-5 years

Jim Heid, FASLA, MSRED MIT

Jim Heid is a land planner, strategic real estate advisor and sustainable development consultant. He is known for his ability to effectively distill the complex layers of community design and real estate development into understandable concepts that lead to actionable outcomes and better define the value of place based design.
An active member of ULI, Jim is has authored numerous articles and publications on the subject of sustainable development. He is a founding member of the Responsible Property Investment Council, and lead instructor for ULI programs in Sustainable Community Development and Small Scale Development. In 2013 he helped ULI develop a new program focused on the complexities and gains being made in Mixed Use Development. He has successfully led this course in three major US cities since its launch in June 2013.
His firm – UrbanGreen – (www.urbangreen.net) advises legacy landowners, governments, real estate developers and capital market providers seeking tangible answers to the rapidly evolving discussion surrounding responsible land development. Current projects include development advisory services for urban mixed use and greenfield mixed income/ mixed use communities. He also serves as an expert advisor to BioRegional’s One Planet Living program, is a CLARB registered landscape architect and regularly featured keynote speaker and moderator for a range of national and international symposia.
Prior to founding UrbanGreen, Jim worked as an urban designer/ land planner and real estate strategy advisor with Design Workshop (1987-1993) and EDAW (1994-2000), where he also served as COO.
Initially trained as a landscape architect at the University of Idaho, Jim went on to earn a Masters of Science in Real Estate Development from MIT as way to more effectively integrate the realms of economics, development and design.
